The Carpetbag Brigade will bring three performances to the Edinburgh Fringe in Scotland this summer: our acrobatic stilt shows Mudfire and The Vanishing Point, and our indoor physical theater piece, You Don't Know Jack.

Blending modern dance, physical theater and stilt acrobatics, The Vanishing Point is a dreamlike physical poem evoking images of evolution and extinction. In a distinctive movement style drawing from Butoh and contact improvisation, The Vanishing Point creates a poetic and otherworldly spectacle of stilt creatures that transform repeatedly, evoking the wonder and sadness of what it means to be - or become - human.

This highly choreographic stilt piece, directed by Kristen Greco, has captivated audiences throughout the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

Brilliant red, nine-foot tall stilt characters emerge from subterranean realms. Fantastic creatures rise with grace, fall with elegance and suspend one another in the air with daredevil lifts and stunts. Enchanting children and mystifying adults, Mudfire invokes our ancient relationship with the power and passion of fire. Echoing the struggle of gods and humans to control the trickster like force of flames, Mudfire's multi-dimensional dramatic images recall different elemental images from before the beginning of time: the dances of fire and rain, the moon in the clouds, a boy and a beast racing against a raging inferno, the rebirth of the forest. An acrobatic stilt spectacle on a mythic scale, the show, directed by Jay Ruby, features all-original music and U.S., Canadian and Mexican performers.

You Don't Know Jack creates an upside-down fairy tale world, shipwrecked between myth and reality. This physical theater and dance piece, set to live music created by the performers, is the surreal, often comic nightmare of an alcoholic dead man and his wildly dysfunctional family.

Inspired by research into fairy tales and combat-caused post-traumatic stress disorder, this ensemble-driven show uses dance, songs, original music, and both found and actor-created texts to create a world where people and monsters are often indistinguishable.

The Edinburgh Fringe (officially the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, commonly just The Fringe) is the world’s largest arts festival. Established in 1947 as an alternative to the Edinburgh International Festival, it takes place in Scotland's capital during three weeks every August alongside several other arts and cultural festivals, collectively known as the Edinburgh Festival.
